Interesting stuff. I believe the theater actually lasted until the mid 70's before being torn down to make way for the 7-11 plaza. Some of my fondest child hood memories were of walking to the theater with my grandmother (she lived at 84 east 34th street)and brothers to watch Disney classics. Also vivdly recall walking to Hartman's. My grandparents did all of their grocery shopping at Hartman's. Incidentally, Hartman's is now County Line animal hospital. The landromat across the street is no a bar called Shooters. The Rexall is an H & R block. Marvell Bakery is still in business on 34th street. Spent a good deal of my childhood in Steger, and have just recently built a house there. The house is on Green street on the north side of 34th street. As the population ages, the folks who have owned 2 or 3 lots besides there own for the past 50 years are passing on and their heirs sell the property. It seems like any time a vacant lot is for sale, it is quickly purchased with a new home sprouting shortly thereafter. Enjoyed reading your sight and thought you might appreciate an update on the town of Steger.

My grandfather, Martin Goonan left County Mayo after the turn of the century to go to the Great War and ended up in an hospital in North-east Scotland where he met my grandmother and the Aberdeen Goonans were formed. I think he came from a very small community called Shrak (not sure of spelling) in Mayo. The only other thing I know is that he had a brother, Michael, who went to America and 'disappeared'. This site is marvellous and I can't wait to show my father Tom, sadly the only male son of Martin still alive (Michael died in the 70s, Tony died late 90s and Martin died just 3 weeks ago).
